Favorite Book Quote

What's your favorite book quote? And why?

Mine has remained pretty constant through the years. Charles Dickens is one of my main men, and I can never get enough of "A Christmas Carol." Never.

Ye Olde London charms me, and friendly Fezziwig, and Scrooge's sunny demeanor at the end (spoiler alert), but I think I like Marley's ghostly visitation best. Marley's Ghost is also behind my favorite line which is this:

"Mankind was my business."

It says everything, right? The line in full:

"Business!" cried the Ghost, wringing its hands again. "Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence were, all, my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!"

Life can be loose-edged and frankly maddening, and when my own heart feels less than benevolent, I circle back to this sentiment. Caring for one another is key.

It's a worldview I try to bring to my own writing, because I do adore when people are kind to each other. Or when two people commit to helping each other in all the ways they don't yet know they need help.
